Open Minded!

Open Minded

We all seem to get ‘stuck’ in our own habits, behaviors and patterns. It is quotes like this that help to remind us that our brains aren’t going to fall out if we are open minded about something.

Maybe you don’t agree with abortion but the young woman who was raped might feel differently. Maybe you don’t agree with gay marriage but the couple that has been together 25 years might feel differently. Maybe you don’t believe in religions other than your own but the Buddhist might feel differently.

My point is just because you don’t agree with something doesn’t mean you can’t be open minded about it.

For years I drove with a bumper sticker that said ” A closed mind is a wonderful thing to lose.” Amen

I love this topic! The reason I love it so much is because I have met and known SO many different kinds of people and learned SO many things by opening up my mind to them and their ideals.I have learned that truly open minded people are ok to disagree with and they don’t try to brow beat their beliefs into you. They truly understand and accept the fact not everyone thinks or lives like they do. I have also met a lot of people that claim to be open minded but the more you get to know them the more you realize they aren’t, unless you are agreeing with their views. They seems to think that because they are tolerant of one thing that they can label themselves as open minded.

For example, just so there is no confusion, last year I met a woman with an alternative lifestyle and we hit it off great and I thought now here’s a really cool chick I could see myself being friends with. In getting to know her, there were several things we disagreed about, various moral topics and I found that even though she was of an alternative lifestyle, she had very low tolerance for people who did not share her spiritual or cultural beliefs. In fact it was to the point where I could no longer bring myself to associate with her because she would not allow someone to have an opinion that differed from her own.

The conclusion is, just because someone might not be “mainstream” society and lives what is considered an alternative lifestyle that doesn’t automatically make them an open minded individual. Intolerance comes in all forms, from all walks of life. Intolerance = closed mind.
